I don't feel like I am strong enough

People truly disgust me... [08 Dec 2006|04:56am]
[ mood | drained ]

"Just because you can conceive a child outside a one-woman, one-man marriage doesn't mean it's a good idea. Love can't replace a mother and a father."

- Carrie Gordon Earll, a policy analyst for the conservative Christian ministry Focus on the Family, responding to the news of Vice Presidential daughterMary Cheney's pregnancy
SOURCE

I was taking a look at the comments to the above post, and I was amazed at the horrible things that some of the people were saying. I mean, it's obvious that many of them are religious, but some of the things they said seemed like things that shouldn't really be expected to come out of a pious person's mouth.

Also, why, when protesting homosexuals, must people always make the argument, "It was Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve"?

After all, We all know how well Adam and Eve did.

However, I've never heard this argument before:

Evolution taught us:

cavegirl#1 and cavegirl#2 = No children

caveman1 and cavegirl2 = children

Lesson of the day

Thanks,
Charles Darwin

And in response to hearing about Mary Cheney's pregancy, a truly disgusting person wrote, "Wrong wrong wrong. They are going to ruin this child. I hope she miscarries.

Don't even get me started. If I ever met this person on the street and they said that, trust me... they wouldn't have to worry about anything short of reconstructive surgery for their face. Honestly, how can you *wish* a miscarriage on anyone, regardless of how you feel about their lifestyle?

Another person said, "I have no problem with gay people; just 2 of them raising a child. not fair to the child.

So, of course, being the curious person I am, I decided to find research concerning homosexual parents in order to see just how "not fair" it is to children.

According to http://www.pflagupstatesc.org/statistics.htm,
"An estimated 6 million to 14 million children have a lesbian or gay parent. Courts in 11 states have ruled that gay men and lesbians, on the basis of their sexual orientation, are unfit to receive custody of their children. A review of 9 studies of aspects of personal development--such as self-concept, moral judgment, and intelligence-revealed no significant difference between children of lesbians and gay men and children of heterosexuals.

As for the claim that I always hear about homosexuals being pedophiles:
"There is no legitimate scientific research connecting homosexuality and pedophilia. Sexual orientation is defined as an adult attraction to other adults. Pedophilia is defined as an adult sexual attraction or perversion to children. In a study of 269 cases of child sex abuse, only two offenders where found to be gay or lesbian. More relevant was the finding that of the cases involving molestation of a boy by a man. Seventy-four percent of the men were or had been in a heterosexual relationship with the boys mother or another female relative. the conclusion was found that 'a child's risk of being molested by his or her relatives' heterosexual partner is over one hundred time greater than by someone who might be identifiable as being homosexual'".
SOURCE

Oh, and just to support the quote above about children raised in same-sex parenting families,
"The studies conclude that children of gay or lesbian parents are no different than their counterparts raised by heterosexual parents. In 'Children of Lesbian and Gay Parents,' a 1992, article in Child Development, Charlotte Patterson states, 'Despite dire predictions about children based on well-known theories of psychosocial development, and despite the accumulation of substantial body of research investigating these issues, not a single study has found children of gay or lesbian parents to be disadvantages in any significant respect relative to children of heterosexual parents.

Oh, and interesting tidbit of information: "The word "homosexual" did not appear in any translation of the Christian Bible until 1946. There are words in Greek for same-sex sexual activities, yet they never appear in the original text of the New Testament".

[30 Nov 2006|10:20pm]
[ mood | exhausted ]

I have just returned from a 'field trip' to Elmira College. My Mark Twain class went on a tour of a Mark Twain museum-type thing, walked in his 'study' where he wrote The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, The Prince and the Pauper, and many other of his fantastics pieces of work, visited his sister-in-laws farm where the study was originally built, and where he also wrote Roughing It.

I can't even describe how amazing this experience was. To be standing in the area that Mark Twain wrote most of his famous books, it was just... amazing.

We first went to a building at Elmira College, where we received an overview of Twain's biography. We then walked to the 'study' that his sister-in-law Susan and brother-in-law Theodore built for Mark on their farm so that he would have a quiet place to write.

It's beautiful. I would love to have something like this when I get my own place. It was so amazing to jus tbe standing in that room. I mean, even though it has a different floor, and it's in a different place, and some of the furniture was not really Twain's... I was standing inside the walls that Mark Twain, an amazing humorist and one of my favorite authors, had worked his magic to create some of the best pieces of American literature.

After that, we went to the Elmira College Library Archives, where we got to see books that Twain had owned, first edition copies of his books, and so much more. There were books that Mark had written in the margins in, and, the things he wrote... they were hilarious. There was a book, which I'm guessing was a fairly poor book. On the inside of the front cover he wrote something like, "The dialogue in this book is idiotic", but of course a lot funnier than that. Later in the book he wrote, "Unhappy dog stranded on island with idiots". The book ended with the author saying that there was much more to tell, and that he might consider writing more books about it, and Twain wrote something along the lines of, "If you do, you deserve to be lynched and dragged around town".

After the library, we drove to the farm that had been owned by Twain's wife's sister, Susan. Once again, I was overcome with this feeling of awe. I couldn't believe I was sitting on the porch that Mark Twain had sat on while reading the work that he had written each day to his family. I looked out onto the valley that Twain had looked out upon while thinking, and walked in the living room where
He had written Roughing It and where he told his three daughters Aesop's Tales, often changing the stories to include his daughter in them.

Around the fireplace were tiles with images from Aesop's Fables, and at night, Twain would have his daughter's point at one or two of the tiles and he would tell them a bed time story based on those tiles. I can't tell you how many times today I was just struck at this man's genius.

This is where the study originally, and we got to climb the stairs and stand on this spot:

And it is such an honor that we got to enter this house. Generally it is closed off to the public. To really stay in the house, you have to, basically, be writing a Twain essay or book. And there are no real tours allowed because there was a stipulation when the Langdon family gave the house to Elmira College that the house never be turned into a museum. So we were really very lucky to be able to walk around inside that house.

It was so beautiful. There's a caretaker that lives there, and one of the girls in my class asked if he was allowed to have his family live there, and our guide said yes, but he wasn't married. I was like, "Where is he? Is he hot?" Haha. I would love to live there. It's so peaceful and beautiful and historic.

So, yeah, that was my day. We saw a speaker as well, and he was pretty good, but by 7:00, when he spoke, I was exhausted. But all in all, I had a pretty good time.

Representation of Interracial Relationships on Heroes [20 Nov 2006|05:16am]
[ mood | thoughtful ]

Interracial relationships, despite being slightly more accepted nowadays, have generally been frowned upon.

NBC's new hit show, Heroes has been doing an amazing job at breaking the barriers between races.

There are several interracial relationships in the series that are evolving throughout the season. I'm not going to go into detail about relationship problems these characters may be having or powers that the characters exhibit, because I don't want to, a) make this longer than it needs to be, or b) spoil too much for anyone who may stumble upon this.

I am going to issue a blanket spoiler alert. Some of the information I'll be writing is based on things that have been disclosed in the episodes, and some of what I'm going to write is going to be pure observation, and perhaps ill-informed guesses (you've been warned).

Also, I will be using general terms, such as black and white, when discussing race, because not all black Americans are African, and not all white Americans are Caucasian. If I find anything about the actors' ethnicities, I will include that information.

So, now that the necessary warnings are out of the way, I guess I'll start:

Interracial Relationships in Heroes

1.) First, there is the marriage of Niki Sanders (played by Ali Larter) and D.L. Hawkins (Leonard Roberts). Niki is white, and D.L. is black. They have a son, Micah(Noah Gray-Cabey).

2.) Simone Deveaux (Tawny Cypress) is a black female who at the beginning of the series had a relationship with Isaac Mendez (Santiago Cabrera, who is Venezuelan). Her friendship with Peter Petrelli (Milo Ventimiglia, who I am guessing is Italian/Sicilian) blooms into a romantic relationship. As of this post, there is no established relationship between Simone and either man.

3.) Mohinder Suresh (Sendhil Ramamurthy) is an Indian Professor who is befriended by Eden McCain (Nora Zehetner), his father's neighbor. Before Mohinder heads back to India, he shares a kiss with Eden, but as of this post, there is no established relationship.

4.) The newest interracial relationship possibly began developing during the November 13, 2006 episode between Japanese Hiro Nakamura (Masi Oka) and red-haired Texan waitress Tina (Deirdre Quinn). The two were obviously attracted to each other in this episode, but so far, no relationship has been initiated or established.

Obviously, to have so many interracial relationships, there has to be a wide distribution of ethnicities.

So, how good of a job has Heroes done at creating a ethnically diverse cast?

Compared to other popular shows (using characters who have appeared / are scheduled to appear) in at least 75% of the episodes (source: imdb.com):

Heroes: (9 episode average, 7 for 75%)
White: 8 (includes, for example, Sicilian and Venezuelan) = 57%
Asian: 3 (includes Japanese and Indian) = 21.5%
Black: 3 (includes "Haitian") = 21.5%

CSI (Las Vegas): (Approximately 147 episodes, 110 for 75%)
White: 7 = 87.5%
Asian: 0 = 0%
Black: 1 = 12.5%

Lost: (54 episodes, 40 for 75%)
White: 8 = 66.5%
Asian: 3 = 25%
Black: 1 = 8.5%

Grey's Anatomy: (44 episodes, 33 for 75%)
White: 6 = 60%
Asian: 1 = 10%
Black: 3 = 30%

Unfortunately, the only other show I watch out of these four is CSI, so I am unaware of how much (or little) they represent interracial relationships. Despite my ignorance of this fact, I think it is safe to say that Heroes has a higher range of ethnicities among main characters than many shows that are popular today. EDIT: After sleep and a re-reading of this statement several days later, I realize that the data provided above does not really match the statement. I just wanted to point out that although Heroes may appear have a diverse range of ethnicities, many other shows do have a variety of ehnicities as well. The point I was originally going for, but seemed to have strayed from, is that Heroes has a high number of interracial relationships and prospective romances.

Because I love Emily Dickinson, and it's my birthday, so I can... (but I would anyway even if it wasn't my birthday)

Hope is the thing with feathers

Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul,
And sings the tune--without the words,
And never stops at all,

And sweetest in the gale is heard;
And sore must be the storm
That could abash the little bird
That kept so many warm.

I've heard it in the chillest land,
And on the strangest sea;
Yet, never, in extremity,
It asked a crumb of me.

I'm Nobody! Who are you?

I'm Nobody! Who are you?
Are you—Nobody—Too?
Then there's a pair of us!
Don't tell! they'd advertise—you know!

How dreary—to be—Somebody!
How public—like a Frog—
To tell one's name—the livelong June—
To an admiring Bog!

I died for beauty, but was scarce

I died for beauty, but was scarce
Adjusted in the tomb,
When one who died for truth was lain
In an adjoining room.

He questioned softly why I failed?
"For beauty," I replied.
"And I for truth, -the two are one;
We brethren are," he said.

And so, as kinsmen met a night,
We talked between the rooms,
Until the moss had reached our lips,
And covered up our names.

You're welcome...

I should be reading Dracula for my Gothic Lit class, but that would require me moving my fat lazy ass away from the computer. I would read it on the internet, but my eyes would suffer even more than they all ready do.

Today's my birthday! Yay! Or not. 23. I can't believe it. It's been over 4 years since I graduated high school. And in just over a month, I'll be a college grad as well. But where did the time go? Seriously. Let me see, 8 years ago, I entered highschool. In 8 years, I'll be 31. Time is so abstract, and yet... I don't know. I'm such a loser.

I just found out that someone that I've liked for a really long time has moved pretty damn far away. And it's not like he knew I liked him, and it's not like I ever expected anything to happen, but I'm still devestated. And tempted to hop on a plane and search him out. But he'd never be interested in me, so all I can do is hope that I'll eventually find someone who cares for me as much as I do for them.

Is that so much to ask?

I guess so...

[06 Nov 2006|12:06pm]
[ mood | contemplative ]

I have to admit, I'm addicted to blogs. Well, actually I just look at the pictures because most of the time I could care less about the "stories". My two favorite (or at least, most checked) blogs? Pinkisthenewblog.com and PerezHilton.com.

I could probably write a book about the differences between these two blogs, and their maintainers: Trent Vanegas (PitNB) and Mario Lavandeira (Perez).

I'll start off by admitting that I like Trent more than I like Perez, but I will try to make this as fair as possible, because there are some things that I like about Perez as well.

One difference between these 2 blogs is the way that they are formatted. Trent updates about once a day with one long blog, usually ended with News Links. His commentary on the pictures are in pink, are often satirical, but rarely overly offensive.

Perez updates several times a day. Most of the time, his posts are categorized by which celeb(s) appear or are mentioned in the post. His pictures are covered with comments that are written with what appears to be Microsoft Paint pencil in white, and are often accompanied by drawn-on cum drizzling from the mouth and/or "drug" spots under the nose. The commentary is often crude and disrespectful.

There are a number of times I have seen Perez be respectful, and they usually include information about Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie, or other celebrities that he has formed "friendships" with. I read an interview where he said that no one is safe from being made fun of, even his friends, and while he does still make fun of Ashlee Simpson (who he often hangs out with), any bad press about Paris Hilton has been suspiciously missing from his blog.

Of course, I don't think that Trent is different in that aspect. His celebrity friends most often mentioned in his blog are Hilary Duff and the Madden Twins (Benji and Joel). Trent rarely says anything bad about these people (excluding some criticism of Hilary's choice of pants), but maybe he just has a better taste in friends. No one can deny that Perez is not partial to Paris because the after effects of her D.U.I. were mysteriously absent from his blog.

Back to how each blogger shows their respect. I recall reading several posts of Perez where he would mention that his thoughts were with people who were in need of comfort, for example, Run's family, Nicole Richie's grandmother, and in passing, Steve Irwin.

I think it's commendable that Perez does incorporate these types of mentions in his posts. The thing is that it often seems that being the first to break a story is more important to Perez than a) getting the details correct, and b) considering people's feelings.

I'm going to move on to Trent and how he shows his respect towards his readers and people in general. On September 11th, 2006 , Trent posted a list of those who had lost their lives in 2001. He said " it just seem[ed] wrong" to "blog about Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan or anything else celebrity related" on the anniversary of that day. Source

And yesterday when I checked the site for my daily dose of PiTNB, I saw this message,

Late last night/early this morning my friends and I witnessed a fatal hit and run accident in front of the 101 Coffee Shop on Franklin Ave.

The comments section has been disabled.

There will be no further post today.
Source

Trent shows human qualities that Perez often leaves out of his posts, including compassion.

Now, why do I read PerezHilton.com if I (seemingly) dislike so much of what he does?

Because I usually enjoy reading his blog. The pictures are often disgustingly edited, but every now and then, Perez writes something that is laugh-out-loud funny. I'm someone who enjoys the works of Adam Sandler and Will Ferrell, two comedians who are often seen as crude and unfunny. Does that say something about Perez? Maybe. It might just mean that he's an acquired taste. You either like his humor or you don't. I'm mostly on the fence about him, though.

Both bloggers are unapologetic about how they present their news and their opinions; however, Perez's opinions are continually more disrespectful than Trent's.

Now for the reason I'm writing this entry. Perez is often credited with forcing *N Sync's Lance Bass to come out of the closet. Most recently, Neil Patrick Harris has also admitted that he is gay. This closely follows a post from Perez pleading with Harris to come out. Perez has firmly held his opinion that he is only giving homosexuals in Hollywood a nudge, to come out in the public's eye and give other homosexuals reassurance.

I think it's great. Gay people should feel safe and confident in their sexuality and let the world know about it when they want to . Perez is basically throwing people out of the closet. I know there are mixed feelings about this. Yes, gays should be able to come out. Gay relationships may be more accepted if those who are gay stop hiding their feelings and open themselves for public scorn.

Wait, what?

Ok, here's what I think. A homosexual person has a lot to deal with. Reactions from their families, religious people condemning them, the public, including complete strangers, even more closely scrutinizing their every move. They need to build themselves up for that. Even if it's known by "all of Hollywood" that a person is gay, that doesn't necessarily mean that they want the world to know yet.

Perez badgers closeted celebs into outing themselves because of the enormous pressure put on them by the press after Perez constantly urges them to come out.

Do I want to know for sure if, say, Sean Hayes is gay? Sure. Curiosity is human nature. But, I'd rather be kept wondering and him be content, than know for sure because he was forced to come out, but was not yet comfortable with having everyone know.

As more and more gay celebs come out, non-famous homosexuals (I'm guessing here, correct me if I'm wrong) may begin to feel more acceptance, or at least less alone. But that doesn't mean that a person's privacy should be sacrificed because a blogger wants to increase the traffic to his website.

It seems that being a celebrity is hard enough when trying to maintain privacy, but being a homosexual celebrity has got to be so much worse, especially when someone's continually pleading with you, in a very public forum, to reveal something about yourself that is really no one's business.

Just because you're out and proud, Perez, doesn't mean that everyone else is ready to be as well.

Well, anyway, there's my post about a bunch of stuff that doesn't really have anything to do with me.
I suppose if I were gay, I would have more to say on this issue, but even as a straight person, I think that there is something off about the way Perez approaches closeted homosexual celebrities.

So... some conservative idiot is trying to tell me... [03 Nov 2006|12:22am]
that Stephen Colbert is the reason America is going downhill and that no one is taking anything seriously... At least that's what I'm getting from this conversation at imdb.com:

CWHT (Conservative who hates truthiness - I have to give him some anonymity):

"Wow, I never saw anyone put Colbert in hios place like that. Just take away his prop cards and Colbert turns into a sniveling crybaby. Has he been editing the show to hide his reliance on these cards. This calls into question whether he is even writing his own material. Colbert looked horrified when his notes were tossed by Penn. He did truly look like a deer in the headlights. He deserved it too. He is always trying to do the hatchet job on someone. Colbert was exposed for the sniveling weasel he really is -- exposed as someone who is as fake as the people he goes after. Who gave you the right Steve?"

Me:

"Obviously the point of the show has flown entirely over your head.

And I guess you were too busy being a moron to notice that Stephen kept up with Penn despite the fact that Penn was being an a$$ and had taken away Stephen's cards.

Stephen does 4 shows a week. He and his writers (which it's a well known fact that many shows have writers) have only a couple of hours to come up with material, and most of the time they do a pretty damn good job with it.

If you don't like the show, don't watch it. Colbert acts that way with his guests because it's a trait of that character. He's not that big of an idiot in real life."

CWHT:
"Whoa... Whoa, hold up peanut gallery. Sorry you feel I am a moron. And all that college money wasted too. I just call it like I see it. I can't see how anyone could think Colbert got the better part of that exchange with Penn. Colbert is a sign, in my humble opinion, that everything really is falling apart. When no one takes anything seriously and something serious happens are you going to run to Colbert?

P.S Please don't take your ball home. "

Me:
"No, I wouldn't run to Colbert, because Stephen's show is meant for entertainment, not for real political issues. Sure, some people do look to The Daily Show and The Colbert Report as news, and maybe that's not the best thing; however, some people just like to laugh.

Just, why do you watch it if you think it's falling apart? "

Anxiously awaiting their reply... I usually don't fight with people like this because I find it stupid, but I don't know, I guess I'm just in the right mood.

And I'm thinking about breaking out(besides this post) of Friends Only... maybe... we'll see.

See, usually, you're only supposed to return the ring... [28 Oct 2006|04:48pm]
VIENNA - A Viennese man cut off his ring finger and presented the digit, still holding his wedding band, to his ex-wife after an acrimonious divorce, Austrian news agency APA reported Tuesday.

Charged with dangerous harassment and assault for the act, he told a preliminary hearing he did not regret having cut off the finger and had chosen deliberately not to reattached it.

“It was an act of breaking free,” the man was quoted as saying. He did not miss his finger, could work well without it and did not plan on getting married again anyway, he said.

I don't feel like I am strong enough

*Please read warning* [08 Mar 2006|05:04pm]
[ mood | amused ]
[ music | Dance Dance - FOB - nekkid pics of Pete on web.. woot... ]

*WARNING* - This post isn't intended to hurt anyone or really poke fun at anyone... I just was amused by it and felt I needed to share it... So, please do not take offense... I'm not trying to start drama... No no drama... no no no no drama drama... *END UN-NECESSARY WARNING*

So, it's been a long time since I've written in this thing...
I just felt that I had to share something very funny with everyone...

Here are some excerpts from minutes from a meeting (they were sent out in the real minutes, but they're not the real minutes, so I can't technically get in trouble for posting them here on livejournal...)

So, here, for your amusement, are the excerpts from the "minutes" of Delta Zeta:

1. Katie had pasta for dinner

2. Something might have been said, I don’t remember.

3. We might file for bankruptcy.

4. Mrs. J said that she is currently wearing purple underwear with yellow dots.

5. Please dress nicely and spike your hair as tall as you can get it.

6. Leela and Big-Bird will be doing {lounge duty} until then.

7. Mrs. J likes cake and icecream.

*******************************************************

Now, I may act, look, and seem stupid, but I don't think any degree of sleeplessness could lead someone to "accidentally" type what color Mrs. J's underwear is. Now, I love Hoss, but I believe that the exec board, or certain members of the exec board came up with this "minutes screwed the frig' up" to make sure that people were actually reading the minutes.

I mean, come on, the minutes for the meeting where 2 exec board members got upset because people weren't reading the minutes... and magically, this week, it seems as if the minutes were written while on several different types of drugs and Draino...

Ah, der... I don't mind the whole "trick" thing... quite clever actually.. I applaud the effort *applaud*.... however, I don't like being lied to... it insults my intelligence (which I have by the way)... and it decreases the amount I trust a person...

So, in conclusion (this is probably the only time I'll ever say that),
1. Don't do drugs kids
2. Don't lie
3. Have a nice day

Love,
Mindy
